Spirit at Work presents
Thursday, November 19, 2009 12:00 - 1:30 p.m.
Spirit and Health Care: Inspiring hope and resiliency
with Rev. Don Hill, Chaplain in Critical Care, St. Paul’s Hospital Have you developed the art of healthy selfishness?
From Florence Nightingale to Mother Teresa, selfless devotion to healing others has remained an ideal for quality health care. Swallow one's suffering. Give tirelessly. Make the patient's physical comfort supreme. But what about the spirit of a sick one: How well are our hospitals and institutions tending to that? And amidst today's hospital cutbacks and long patient waiting lists, caregiver burnout has become a serious concern. How well are we truly caring for ourselves, while we care for others?
Join Don Hill as he shares surprising insights on how what he calls "healthy selfishness" - not selflessness - fuels compassionate caregiving. How does he help to inspire hope and resiliency in patients? What do holistic models in health care look like? What has helped patients cope when they’re hospitalized? Don will explore these questions, plus the history and major components of spiritual and religious care in hospitals/institutions.
