Do organizations have a moral responsibility to be fully engaged in their communities and not simply money-making machines?
Milton Friedman argued that a business leader had a responsibility to make money for the shareholders and any other focus, including so-called corporate social responsibility, was a form of theft of shareholder money and therefore immoral. The capitalist organization is to make money, and do nothing else.
This interactive session will explore a critical response to Friedman’s argument suggesting that in fact healthy organizations are active in their communities, not just as job providers, but as full and engaged corporate citizens. And that the individuals working inside of those organizations thrive; thriving people = thriving (profitable!) organizations.
